Subject: FCNL: This Earth Day, Help Bring Congress Back to Earth to Reduce
Oil Dependence
Act Now for Peace, Security, a Healthy Environment, and a Stable Climate.
Today, Thursday, April 21, the House is expected to complete work on
its omnibus energy bill (H.R. 6), a bill that would set priorities for
national energy policy for the next several years. While the bill has
many positive elements, overall, the bill does not offer a good
blueprint for our future. It emphasizes boosting environmentally
harmful domestic oil, gas, coal, and nuclear energy supplies over
reducing energy demand. It proposes too little, too late to reduce the
United States' dangerous and environmentally damaging dependence on
oil.
Congress needs to get real about reducing U.S. oil dependence. The
Senate must do better. Soon, your senators will begin drafting their
own version of the bill. Now is the time to let them know how urgent
and important it is for the U.S. to reduce its oil dependence now.
ACT NOW!
Please contact your senators. Urge them to promote a national
mobilization to rapidly reduce U.S. oil consumption, improve the
efficiency of our transportation system and vehicles, and accelerate
development and use of renewable fuels and energy sources. Urge them to
oppose giving subsidies or tax credits to the oil industry, oppose
opening the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil exploration, and
oppose reducing environmental protection in the permitting and
production of oil and gas on public lands and the outer continental
shelf.

On April 20, the House defeated amendments that would have increased
average vehicle fuel economy standards to 33 miles per gallon by 2015
and closed the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil exploration.
