Subject: House Vote on ANWR Expected This Week - FCNL
HR 5429, a bill to authorize drilling for oil in the Arctic National
Wildlife Refuge (ANWR), sponsored by Rep. Pombo (CA), chairman of the
House Resources Committee, is on a fast-track to the House floor for a
vote expected as early as tomorrow (May 25) or Friday.
*ACT NOW*
Call or email your representative today and urge him or her to oppose
drilling in ANWR.
Opening ANWR to oil production is no way to address our country's oil
addiction. Pumping and burning another 10 billion barrels of oil out
of Alaska 10 years from now will do nothing to address gasoline
shortages today. Drilling in ANWR would only continue to feed our
country's addiction, harm an irreplaceable wildlife refuge, and spew
billions more tons of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Urge your
representative instead to support policies to promote energy
conservation, energy efficiency, alternative renewable fuels, and
alternative transportation choices.

*BACKGROUND*
Republican leaders are promoting H.R. 5429 as a response to high energy
prices. However, oil from ANWR would not start flowing to market for
another seven to 10 years, and, if there is as much oil as they think
there is (about 10 billion barrels), it would fulfill only 3 percent to
4 percent of U.S. oil demand when it reaches peak production.
Meanwhile, U.S. oil consumption is expected to continue to grow.
Today, the U.S. is consuming oil at a rate of about 21 million barrels
per day (mbd). (China is the second largest consumer in the world at
6.5 mbd.) By 2025, the Energy Information Administration expects the
U.S. to be consuming about 28 mbd.
