*More Information*
It took thousands of years for the plant and animal communities to
co-evolve in the frozen, forbidding environment that is the Arctic
National Wildlife Refuge, and it took epochs to lay down and store the
hydrocarbons in the rock strata beneath. But it will take only a couple
of short decades for the oil industry to disrupt the fragile web of
life on the surface, extract the energy value that lays beneath it, and
release millions of years' worth of stored carbon to the atmosphere --
all for the equivalent of six to twelve months of U.S. oil consumption.
Is this wise stewardship of the earth? What kind of legacy will this
leave to our descendants?
