Subject: Success! A major step towards satellite voting...
Dear ColorOfChange.org member,
This morning, ColorOfChange.org members made calls to the Louisiana
State Legislature in support of satellite voting, and it paid off! HB
641--a bill which would provide satellite voting for displaced
residents--narrowly passed the House and Government Committee. Having
overcome this initial hurdle, it will now be considered and debated by
the full Louisiana House, giving satellite voting another chance to
succeed. Had the bill been voted down in committee, it would have been
dead.
It's likely that our calls made a critical difference. The bill passed
committee 5-4, with representatives voting along party lines. Billy
Montgomery--one of the representatives we targetted with calls this
morning--abstained from voting, allowing the bill to get through
committee.
This is a major step towards achieving a fair vote for people
displaced by Katrina. With the whole Louisiana House set to focus its
attention on HB 641, we have another chance to shine a spotlight on
the issue and fight for satellite voting. We'll continue to monitor
the bill and let you know how you can contribute to the effort.
Thanks and Peace,
