Subject: Iranian missile launches escalate tensions
Dear Peace Supporter,
I thank you for being among the first 25,000 to sign our "No War with Iran!"
petition - and regret to confirm the latest news from that country.
News sources reported yesterday that Iran tested dozens of missiles,
including the long range Sahab-3, at the beginning of ten days of military
exercises intended as a response to recent American-led exercises in the
Persian Gulf. This is yet one more escalation in an already precarious
situation between the United States and Iran.
As part of our growing work to prevent a war with Iran, Peace Action has now
joined forces with After Downing Street and Progressive Democrats of
America. With the help of Cindy Sheehan they will be delivering their own
petition, "Don't Attack Iran," to the White House next Wednesday, November
8, and we urge you to add your name before they deliver it.

While we would not usually ask you to sign two similar petitions like this,
the critical difference is that theirs is addressed to the White House,
while the Peace Action petition you signed is addressed to Congress. Both
branches of government need to start feeling the pressure on this issue now,
and that is why I urge you to also sign the "Don't Attack Iran" petition.

General Yahya Rahim Safavi, head of the Revolutionary Guards in Iran,
described the missile launches as a reaction to American military threats,
contending "We want to show our deterrent and defensive power to
trans-regional enemies, and we hope that they will understand the message of
the maneuvers."
And when he says "trans-regional enemies," he means us.
It is impossible to overemphasize the horrific consequences that would flow
from a war with Iran, which could well escalate into the "clash of
civilizations" that some of the neo-cons in the Bush Administration actually
desire. U.S. and Iran-led military maneuvers will only further devastate
any chance we have for a peaceful settlement to this growing conflict, and
we must compel our government to stop the saber-rattling and come to the
negotiating table.
Thanks again for signing Peace Action's "No War with Iran!" petition to the
House and Senate leadership. Now let's keep the message going to President
Bush!

We will continue to update you on new developments, as well as next steps
with our own campaign after the election. With your help, we can and will
prevent a war with Iran.
Sincerely,
Kevin Martin
Executive Director
Peace Action
P.S. In only a month we have gathered more than 25,000 signatures on our
"No War in Iran!" petition due to the overwhelming dedication to peace or
supporters like you. We will be taking the next steps to pressure Congress
soon, including a significant online promotion effort of the campaign, but
we need you to add your signature and support now to the "Don't Attack Iran"
petition, which will be delivered to George W. Bush next Wednesday, November
8. Thanks for signing it today!
