Another set of documents relating to John Roberts' earlier career as a
Reagan administration lawyer has been released from the National Archives,
and this
one contains some inflammatory comments about Congress. In 1983, plans were
circulating to create a new appeals court to reduce the workload of the
Supreme
Court, an idea favored by many congressional leaders. But in a letter to a
federal appellate court judge, Roberts, who opposed the plan, huffed, "Out
only
hope is that Congress will continue to do what it does best - nothing." In
another document, Roberts also disagreed with Congress' decision to award
the
late Rep. Leo Ryan a Congressional Gold Medal after he was killed
investigating the cult run by Jim Jones. Roberts wrote that the "actions
leading to his
murder can be viewed as those of a publicity hound."

Who Says That?
"It looks like a lot of that place [New Orleans] could be bulldozed." -
House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-IL), displaying excellent timing and
unparalleled
compassion as thousands of people who call New Orleans home scramble to put
their lives back together. Hastert said of rebuilding the city, "We ought to
take a second look at it. But you know we build Los Angeles and San
Francisco on top of earthquake fissures and they rebuild too. Stubbornness."
